SPOILER Alert

What a nice piece!
- I liked the score.
- I liked his facial expressions. The story is almost completely told in his expressions.
- I liked the connection created by color and pattern to reinforce the "union."
- The flowers reminded me of a peacock, which display color to get attention. Nice touch.

Very awesome work, Teresa!

Not sure if you are doing this for professional development or pure enjoyment but I think this would be a great way to learn how to be awesome in front of clients. Do you see a correlation between improv and client dealings?

Not to mention this just sounds like a great time :)

Hey thanks for the feedback, Scott (it's nice to know someone is actually reading this stuff!). You know, my experience has been much like what you describe. I was prepared for scary -- I wasn't prepared for how profound it has been thus far. After only 2 classes, I'm already significantly more aware of my inner critic and am practicing ignoring it. IE: last night I met with a friend to start recording a song and before I went I told myself I was going to ignore the negative voice in my head and just sing (let it suck, let it be awesome, let it be whatever). As a result, I really tried not to shut down opportunities/explorations of my voice and was much more nimble, playful, loose, and open than I know I would have been prior to the improv class. There were still remnants of the critic, but they were less powerful. And I had a GREAT time.

I want to be able to access my own creativity and imagination in a much deeper way, and the class is definitely helping me with that. Thanks for sharing your experience.

The other thing that worked for me were the improv rules we were taught:

1. No half assing
2. Make the other guy look good
3. Yes, and...
4. No apologies

In many ways these are a translation of "Don't be precious", but in real time :)

Not sure if we talked about this ever, but I took an improv class, as a joke, with some friends in 2002. I don't say this about many things, but it changed my life.

I don't remember playing the game you mention, but I found all of the games incredibly silly and child like - I felt that a bunch of 8 year olds could do all these things much easier than I could, but not because it was impossible, but I had layers and layers of made up inhibitions from the adult world that i had to unlearn. It's all there, but I had to strip it away.

The the group of random folks in the class were just as wierded out by the experience the first few weeks, but our teacher did a great job of showing us how subjective it was to respond to the games the way we did, and there was an easier way: just give in.

Please keep writing about your experience. Love to know how it goes and if it gets better or worse for you.

Thanks, Scott. You know, one of the main reasons I like travel is because I feel like I'm more present and "see" more -- everything is so new, I can't help but notice. I forget that when you come back home, the same thing happens - great point.

Idleness is so underrated in our culture. I have a big window in my living room that looks out into the Berkeley Hills. Smack in the center of my view is one tall, lanky palm tree that stands all by itself high above a landscape of buildings. That palm tree is probably the strongest initiator of idleness in my life. Sometimes, I'll be doing something in my living room and my eyes will pause upon that tree - and then suddenly I realize I've been standing there staring at it for a long time. A lot of my "noticing" happens while I'm moving through the world, so those still palm tree moments really stand out to me.

Thanks for reminding me about stillness.

Great post - I fall in and out of good habits on this. Travel helps me a great deal - when I go away and return I find I notice all sorts of little things. I pay more attention because the old suddenly seems new, even if just for a moment.

I've also become fond of being idle. I love to read, and read, and read, but there's something to be said for just sitting around, at a bar or a cafe, and just watch people and things. There's so much interesting stuff everywhere if I can just remember I have to be in a state of mind to notice.

Anyway, thanks for reminding to me to remind myself to notice some things right now :)

This was excellent, thank you. For someone just getting into the field, it really helps to hear a little about where the field came from.

Teresa,

It's amazing what we can discover when we shut off certain senses, opening our mind and changing our perspective on the world around us.

Another brilliant show and one that illustrates how engaging in experiences outside of our own can allow us to innovate by "seeing" the world in a whole new light.

Cheers from Canada

Definitely agreed on all accounts. I guess it's saying something that I was simply excited to see a woman who wasn't a size 2 -- and that it almost seems too much to ask for all the rest you mentioned. Which, of course, it isn't.

Some things that this photo still shares with more common magazine beauty images:

- model is White and blonde
- her face still looks thin (cover her from the shoulders down and can you tell her dress size?)
- she is position in such a way as to hide the fleshier parts of her body (arms and legs crossed to obscure full view)
- her skin is free of blemishes or modifications

Please consider that in many places that aren't North America, size 12 is still far larger than average.

Hi,

this is a great interview and report.

I would like to know, whether we could publish this podcast on our international Dialogue in the Dark website (www.dialogue-in-the-dark.com)?! Dialogue in the Dark is an international project, which has been presented in over 30 countries in the last 20 years. It is always great for our guides all over the world to receive this positive feedback!

Again: GREAT interviews!!! And looking forward to your reply.

Greetings from Germany,
Maret

Thanks, Jinny! A new podcast is posted at the beginning of each month. The blog is updated at various times throughout the week (not necessarily daily, but certainly with more frequency than the podcast) -- it just depends on when I find something interesting to share! I'll try to make that clearer somehow in the blog. Thanks! And come back and visit! Teresa
